I'm Clint Smith, a local portrait and figurative painter. I'm starting this gathering to make room for the conversations that happen when we slow down and look at art together. We'll begin with a couple of portraits, compare what we notice and leave time to get acquainted.

An old idea, a new gathering.
Art has long given people a reason to gather. In early twentieth-century Paris, the Stein family's Saturday salons introduced visitors to new paintings and the artists behind them. This gathering takes inspiration from that tradition of shared looking and conversation, on a small, local scale.
A painting gives us something to talk about from the start. Looking longer can reveal a gesture or a choice of light we missed; hearing another person's response can open up a different way of seeing. It's a chance to enjoy art, practice looking and make room for new acquaintances.

The first topic
What makes a portrait feel alive?
What makes a painted face feel present? We'll look at the eyes, the edges, the light and the moment the painter chose. You can start with an ordinary observation and see where the conversation leads.
What to expect
Look closely
We'll take a little time with each painting before talking. Start with what catches your eye: a face, a gesture, a color or a detail.
Share perspectives
Clint will offer a few prompts and invite different observations. We'll connect our ideas to what we can see in the paintings.
Get acquainted
There will be time for conversation and optional sketching. Paper and pencils will be available if you'd like to draw.
Come on your own or with a friend. You are welcome to listen, ask questions or join the conversation. No art experience, supplies or preparation are needed.

Do I need any art experience?
Curiosity is enough. People who make art and people who simply enjoy looking at it are equally welcome.
How does this fit with the atelier's classes?
This is a free, informal conversation hosted by Clint. Workshops teach painting skills, and demo nights show a painting process. Here, the focus is looking at art together and getting acquainted. No enrollment or purchase is needed.
Does joining the list reserve a seat?
No. You are asking to receive the first invitation once the date and venue are set.
What will it cost?
Nothing. There is no fee and no required purchase.
Where and when will it happen?
The first date and venue are being arranged in the Greater Lansing area. The invitation will include the location, timing and how to request a place.
What kind of art will we talk about?
Portraiture and figurative art mostly, along with drawing and oil painting.
Can I come on my own?
Yes. Clint will make introductions and start with a painting everyone can respond to. You can join in at your own pace.
Will this meet every week?
We're starting with one introductory gathering. If people enjoy it, we'll explore a regular time together.
